Damp is is an issue everyone in the UK has to deal with at some point or another. Our team are here to help you remove any damp, as well as restore and clean after any damage caused!
Rising damp is a common problem in the UK, particularly in older buildings with solid walls. It occurs when groundwater is absorbed by porous building materials such as bricks and mortar, causing dampness to rise from the ground and into the walls—like a sponge. This can lead to a variety of problems including peeling wallpaper, mould growth, musty odours, and even structural damage.
Unlike flood damage, which is caused by a one-time or temporary disaster, rising damp is a persistent and pervasive problem throughout the UK. One of the most visible signs of rising damp is the appearance of a “tide mark” on interior and exterior walls. This is caused by the build-up of salts and minerals in the damp patches as the water evaporates. If you see a tide mark, or worse, mould and discolouration creeping up your walls, it’s time to call a professional.
If left untreated, rising damp can cause significant damage to your property, including rotting timbers; peeling paint; crumbling concrete, brick, and plaster; and even the collapse of walls.
The most common issues that we see include:
While many of the problems of damp in your home or business are cosmetic, it can cause serious damage to your building’s structure.
One of the major problems is rotting structural timber. If left untreated, rising damp exposes your framing, floor joists, and roof timbers to excess moisture, causing wet rot (a fungus that forms on wood). Once wet rot takes hold, it releases spores that spread through the wood. This causes wood to become spongy and soft—not at all good for holding up a house! Obviously, this can affect the structural integrity of a building. If structural timbers become damaged, it can lead to collapse. They also can be expensive to replace, which is why you want to stop rising damp quickly.
Water damage is also common in brickwork and mortar, which are porous materials. Prolonged exposure to dampness can cause water to travel through via capillaries in the brickwork and concrete, causing serious structural damage.
Repairing rising damp damage usually involves installing a remedial damp proof course (often referred to as DPC) that are made of nonabsorbent and water-resistant materials, such as slate, bitumen, or polyethene sheets. Most buildings have had some sort of barrier installed at the lower level of the wall to prevent water rising. But it is common for some of these barriers to fail over time. In very old buildings, there may not have been a damp-proof barrier at all.
At Northern restorations, we have years of experience in dealing with and repairing damp damage. If you suspect you have a problem, our team of experts will conduct a thorough assessment of your property to determine the extent of the damage and identify the best course of action.
Our range of services to combat rising damp, such as damp proofing. By installing a damp-proof course in the walls of your property, we can keep ground-level water from entering your home or business. This is a layer of waterproof material that is inserted into the wall above ground level. The choice of material to create an effective damp proof course depends upon your climate, type of building, and extent of moisture. Our experts are skilled in giving you the best cost-effective solution. We offer several types of remedial damp-proof courses, such as:
In addition to rising damp, our damp damage removal specialists can also assist in treating other forms of unwanted moisture, such as condensation and penetrating damp. Condensation occurs when warm, moist air meets a cold surface, causing water droplets to form. This can lead to damp patches, mould growth, and a musty smell in your property. Penetrating damp, on the other hand, occurs when water seeps into your property from the outside, usually through damaged or poorly maintained roofs, gutters, or walls.
At Northern Restorations, we have a long history and knowledge of the unique needs of homeowners in West Yorkshire and northern UK.
